The Importance of Indoor Air Quality
November 13, 2000
Indoor air quality (IAQ) ranks among the top business issues of this decade. A 1990 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report has identified indoor air pollution, commonly associated with sick building syndrome, as one of the four greatest risks to human health.
The World Health Organization estimates that 30% of new and remodeled buildings worldwide experience indoor air quality problems. These problems translate into lost productivity and illnesses ranging from eye, nose, and throat irritation to bronchitis, costing businesses $60 billion each year, according to the EPA.
Identifying and controlling sources of indoor pollutants are the most direct methods to combat indoor air quality problems. The National Academy of Sciences has called for the implementation of indoor air pollution standards for work places, homes and schools to aid in this effort.
