ARclad Heat-Activated Splicing Tapes Offer New Choices For Bonding Specialty Papers, Heavyweight And Challenging Materials

Glen Rock, PA - Adhesives Research, a leading developer and manufacturer of custom pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes (PSAs), specialty coatings, films and laminates, now offers three heat-activated tapes, ARclad 7970LC, ARclad 7970 and ARclad 6194, as new alternatives for splicing specialty paper and heavyweight materials that are not typically spliced with PSA tapes.

ARclad7970LC is a 1.0 mil, heat-activated transfer adhesive with double-sided bonding for overlap splices in specialty papers and newsprint applications. ARclad7970 is a 2.0 mil transfer adhesive that features the same heat-activated transfer adhesive as ARclad 7970LC, but in a higher adhesive coat weight to provide reliable splices in materials often unsuitable for standard PSAs including foams, corks, felts, fabrics, metals, plastic films and plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

The tapes' adhesive becomes activated at 300 F (149 -177 C) for quick set-up of splices and improved productivity. Splices are prepared by activating the adhesive and applying firm pressure followed by a few seconds of dwell time. Operators can easily pre-set splices by tacking the tape in place at a lower temperature and fully activating it at a later time with additional heat, temperature and dwell. ARclad6194 is a 6.4 mil, single-coated heat-activated tape designed for butt splicing textiles as a safer alternative to traditional labor-intensive seaming and sewing splicing methods. This tape offers excellent bond strength once the high-mass adhesive is activated between 300 and 350 F (149 C). ARclad 6194 is appropriate for use with materials such as carpet backings, tufted fabrics, protective clothing, cork, fiberboard and other industrial specialty fabrics. It may also be used in thin caliper automobile carpeting. Temperature and dwell time depend upon each customer's application equipment as well as the substrate's physical properties and dimensions.
